Dateline NBC Tonight August 17 2024: “Point Blank”
On August 16, 2024, NBC’s “Dateline” will air an intriguing episode titled “Point Blank” at 9/8c. The episode, reported by Andrea Canning, delves into the complex and chilling murder of Todd Chance, whose death in August 2013 shocked the Bakersfield community.
Todd Chance, a well-liked truck driver and father of three, was found murdered in an almond grove near Bakersfield, California. The investigation revealed a tangled web of deceit and betrayal involving his wife, Leslie Jenea Chance. Initially, the case seemed to point towards a carjacking gone wrong, especially after Todd’s car was found abandoned. However, this theory unraveled as detectives examined surveillance footage and other evidence.
The episode highlights how Leslie, a respected elementary school principal, seemingly used her knowledge from a Las Vegas CSI-themed exhibit to orchestrate her husband’s murder. The footage, combined with circumstantial evidence, including Leslie’s fingerprint on Todd’s car and her DNA found inside it, pointed to her involvement. Investigators discovered that Leslie had been plotting the crime, motivated by Todd’s online relationship with his ex-fiancée and the potential financial gain from life insurance policies.
The case was not straightforward. Leslie initially evaded suspicion, but as more evidence came to light, including surveillance footage showing a woman resembling Leslie disposing of evidence and using a payphone, law enforcement grew confident in their case against her. Despite Leslie’s claims of innocence, the jury found her guilty of first-degree murder after a trial marked by compelling testimony and incriminating evidence.
Leslie Chance was convicted of the murder in January 2020 and sentenced to 50 years to life in prison. Her defense argued that the evidence was circumstantial, but the court upheld the conviction. “Point Blank” promises to provide a detailed look into this dramatic and unsettling case, showcasing the investigative work that led to Leslie’s conviction and the emotional aftermath for Todd’s family.
