Brittanee Drexel, a 17-year-old from Chili, New York, went missing on April 25, 2009, while on a spring break trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Against her family’s wishes, she had gone with friends and disappeared after leaving a hotel alone. Last seen on surveillance footage, her fate was unknown until 2022 when her remains were found in a South Carolina forest.

For years, the case remained unsolved with no significant leads until 2016, when a prison inmate’s claim led the FBI to treat her disappearance as a homicide. In May 2022, Raymond Moody, a local registered sex offender, was arrested and charged with Drexel’s murder, kidnapping, and criminal sexual conduct. Moody confessed to abducting, raping, and killing Drexel, driven by fear of being caught. His confession, supported by advanced cell phone tracking, led to the discovery of Drexel’s remains near Georgetown, South Carolina, 33 miles from where she was last seen.

The investigation highlighted her last sighting at the Blue Water Resort and utilized extensive searches and interviews, but only broke through with the inmate’s tip in 2016. Raymond Moody’s arrest, confession, and guilty plea in October 2022 brought some measure of closure to Drexel’s family, ending a long period of uncertainty with a life sentence for Moody.
