Kelli Bordeaux: The Full Story
Kelli Bordeaux was a health service specialist assigned to Fort Bragg’s 601st Area Support Medical Company. She had joined the military in 2011 and was a beloved figure both in her hometown of St. Cloud, Florida, and among her peers.
In 2014, the remains of Fort Bragg soldier Kelli Bordeaux were discovered after she had been missing for over two years. Nicholas Holbert, a registered sex offender, was charged with first-degree murder and entered a guilty plea, resulting in a life sentence without parole. Bordeaux’s death was determined to be caused by blunt force trauma to the head. Holbert apologized to Bordeaux’s family in court, though the family expressed their inability to forgive him for the murder.
Bordeaux disappeared on April 14, 2012, after a night out at Froggy Bottoms, a bar in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Holbert, who worked part-time at the bar and lived in a makeshift camp nearby, was the last person seen with her. He had offered to drive her home, but instead, after an argument about his status as a sex offender, he knocked her unconscious and took her to his camp, where he beat her to death when she regained consciousness and screamed.
The investigation into Bordeaux’s disappearance involved repeated questioning of Holbert, but it wasn’t until private investigator David Marshburn intervened that the case broke open. Marshburn befriended Holbert and, after several months, persuaded him to confess and lead authorities to Bordeaux’s shallow grave. The discovery of her remains provided the evidence needed to charge Holbert.
During the plea hearing, Bordeaux’s family members expressed their anguish and frustration, with her mother, Johnna Henson, confronting Holbert directly. Bordeaux’s brother was also present and had to be escorted out of the courtroom after an emotional outburst. The family agreed to the plea deal to avoid the additional trauma of a trial but remained deeply affected by the loss and the circumstances of her death.
