Alissa Turney: The Full Story
In Phoenix, Arizona, Alissa Turney, a 17-year-old high school junior, lived with her stepfather, Michael Turney, and half-sister, Sarah Turney. Alissa worked at Jack in the Box and had a boyfriend. On May 17, 2001, the last day of her junior year, an argument with Michael led to her disappearance. She was last seen when he picked her up from school, and she left behind her belongings, including her cellphone. A note found in her room indicated she was running away to California, but she didn’t attend a planned party.
In 2008, the case was reopened, and Michael Turney became the primary suspect. A search of their home uncovered a cache of weapons and disturbing plans. Additionally, self-proclaimed serial killer Thomas Albert Hymer claimed responsibility for Alissa’s disappearance but lacked evidence.
In August 2020, Michael Turney was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Prosecutors argued that Alissa’s lack of contact suggested foul play. His trial began in July 2023, with emotional testimony from Sarah Turney. However, the judge ruled in favor of the defense due to insufficient evidence, leading to the dropping of all charges against Michael Turney.
As of September 2023, Alissa’s body has not been found, and her case remains unsolved.
